Question of the Day!

What is the difference between a viral and bacterial infection?

What are the risks of overusing antibiotics?

Using antibiotics for viral infections won't help to clear the infection, but unnecessary usage of antibiotics can increase the chance of developing antibiotic-resistant bacteria. These bacteria decrease the overall effectiveness of antibiotics!

True or False?

Pneumonia is a bacterial infection.

How should I treat viral infections?

  1. Over the counter medications such as pain relievers, decongestants, and antihistamines can reduce the severity of the symptoms, but do not eliminate the virus itself
  2. Get enough sleep, drink plenty of fluids, and make sure to get proper nutrition
  3. Ask your doctor about taking antiviral medication
  4. If symptoms worsen and fever continues, contact your doctor. Viruses can develop into secondary bacterial infections!

Common URIs!

Some examples of an URI are: acute sore throat, acute bronchitis, acute sinusitis, influenza, and the common cold.

Question of the Day!

How many URIs do you know of?

True or false?

Viral infections are typically self-limiting, which means that they will resolve in the same amount of time whether or not an antibiotic is taken.

What is an "URI"?

"URI" is short for upper respiratory tract infection. The majority of URIs are viral infections (although there are a few exceptions)

What is an Antibiotic?

Antibiotics are chemical substances that are capable of killing an organism or interfering with its growth or reproduction without negatively impacting the patient. Antibiotics are not effective against viral infections!

Question of the Day!

How do you treat viral infections?

Save the Date!

Get Smart About Antibiotic Awareness Week is happening on November 18-24, 2013!

Get Smart About Antibiotics Week has been an annual an annual effort to coordinate the work of CDC's Get Smart: Know When Antibiotics Work campaign, a state-based appropriate antibiotic use campaigns, non-profit partners, and for-profit partners during a one week observance of antibiotic resistance and the importance of appropriate antibiotic use. The campaign organized its first annual Get Smart About Antibiotics Week in 2008. CDC's Get Smart campaign collaborated with state-based appropriate antibiotic use campaigns and non-profit and for-profit partners.
The 2012 observance also marks the fourth year of an international collaboration, which will coincide with European Antibiotic Awareness Day, Australia's Antibiotic Awareness Week, and Canada's Antibiotic Awareness Week!
